Thesis Direction and Directed Hours (MFA, BFA and BA)
Designed to help students define their place in the contemporary stream of design through independent study and interdisciplinary research, these for-credit hours include discussions and critiques of student work and of contemporary design. Undergraduate and graduate students work toward the completion of a specific, self-defined project during the course of a single semester, or during their final year (BFA and MFA thesis projects).

Graphic Design 3: Professional Practice
This advanced course in visual communication is for students who intend to pursue the field of graphic design after graduation. The class helps prepare students both technically and creatively for professional practice by focusing on research-based projects, which often address the needs of clients from outside the university. The completed projects help build the students' portfolios and have included topical social awareness campaigns focusing on poverty, voter participation, discrimination, and the war with Iraq.

Graphic Design 2: Typography
This intermediate level course in visual communication is for students interested in the art of typography, its history, and the use of type as a critical element in the world of graphic design. The primary emphasis of this class is directed toward an increased awareness of type and its use, leading toward a more highly sophisticated understanding of typography as an art and a skill. I oversee this course during the semesters in which it is taught by visiting professor.

Graphic Design 1: Introduction to Visual Communications
This introductory course explores the origins, concepts, and processes affecting contemporary graphic design. Studio activities introduce and implement both handcraft and digital technology for the creation of original design projects. The course has three major goals: to introduce the visual skills of design communication; to introduce the physical use of materials that aid in the stimulation and presentation of ideas; to give students a general introduction to the field of graphic design-its history, theory and practice. I oversee the second section of this course each semester it is taught by graduate student.
