One of the two main goals of the Bon Sel ("Good Salt") project is to improve the packaging and marketing of the salt product so Haitian consumers understand the added health benefit of diethylcarbamazine (DEC) fortification. DEC helps eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF), which leads to elephantiasis, a devastating problem in Haiti. The green type on the front, Le Deja Lave, translates as "already washed." The practice of washing salt before using it to cook is a cultural habit based on eliminating impurities. Due to the high rate of illiteracy, a simple instructional graphic was created for the back of the package (inset).
