As part of a larger effort to eliminate the spread of lymphatic filariasis in Haiti, the Notre Dame Haiti Program helped launch Kolemo Moustiké, a micro-economic initiative in Leogane. Local seamstresses are employed by the organization to make insecticide-impregnated bed nets. The straightforward approach to the signifying mark considered clear communication as its highest priority, while taking into account cultural expectations. These include the use of the green cross to indicate health care in the Caribbean and the universal understanding of the meaning of the "circle and bar" icon. Research knowledge was gained during a trip to Haiti in the spring of 2002.
